‘Tis the season for giving… but to give you’ve first got to go shopping and get something to give. This year when you grab your shopping list and head out to fight the crowds, don’t forget there’s a lot that you can do right here in your hometown. Shopping locally has many advantages, especially during this, busiest gift-giving time of the year.
This Saturday, November 29th, Citizens National Bank would like to encourage all of our customers (and community members) to support Shop Small® Saturday. This is a country-wide initiative stared by American Express and one we’re excited to help promote. Here are just a few of the reasons why “shopping small” is a good thing for everyone.
You’re Supporting the Local Economy
As this area’s “local” community bank, we have the pleasure of serving many of the local area businesses and many of them are customers, relying on us for business checking, business loans and other business banking services. We take great pride in being able to support them with the right business banking services, but you can help make sure they remain profitable (and remain in business) by spending money in their stores, shops and restaurants. When you spend your money locally, it stays right here, paying local employees and benefiting the business owners that have invested their time (and money) into the community where we all live and work.
It Makes Shopping a Fun and “Hometown” Experience
When you do your shopping locally, you’ll likely find that you’re having more fun than if you hopped in the car and headed to the “big city” for the mall or sat in front of the computer shopping online with your mouse. By coming downtown to support your local merchants, you’ll get in the spirit of the season, likely see friendly faces that you may not have seen for a while and return home knowing that you’ve done a good thing.
Exchanges are Easier, Because Sometimes, It’s Not The Right “Fit”
While you try hard to make sure that each gift you give is the perfect fit, whether it be size, color or style. But sometimes that just doesn’t happen. If you shop locally, the recipient will have an easier time exchanging your gift. Instead of having to hassle with online returns, shipping costs or a long trip to the nearest mall or “big box” store, they can simply head right downtown. Chances are the shop owner will be happy to see them come in, and help make sure they find something that’s a better “fit.”
Find Local Shop Small® Businesses
The folks at American Express have created a Shop Small® website where you can go to search for local participating merchants. Visit their website and then click on the Visit The Shop Small® Map link to start your search. The site will try and identify your location, but you can also change it to whichever city you want and then view dining, shopping, entertainment, travel and services.
Make Shopping Local A Year-Round Commitment
Just remember, while it’s important that you Shop Small® this Saturday, you can support local businesses year-round. Oh, and if you’re in the market for a new bank, you may want to consider one that’s local too – Citizens National Bank.
